Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School is Washington’s first “green” public charter school. The school is dedicated to educating young people to become global stewards in an increasingly complex world.

Mundo Verde has two campuses. Our original campus with students in grades PreK3-5th is located at 30 P Street NW. Our second campus is located at 4401 8th Street NE, launched in August 2019, and serves students in grades PreK3-3rd. The school is free to DC residents and admits students by the common lottery with MySchoolDC.

Mission

Mundo Verde aims to foster high levels of academic achievement among a diverse group of students by preparing them to be successful and compassionate global stewards of their communities.

History

Mundo Verde is the first and only school in the District focusing on Education for Sustainability. The combination of bilingual education and project-based learning (EL Education) is also unique in the District of Columbia.

Grounded in research-based international best practices, Mundo Verde taps into children’s innate curiosity about nature and language and uses hands-on learning techniques.

Curriculum

Mundo Verde’s curriculum is framed around the unifying mission-specific themes of biliteracy and sustainability. It emphasizes

The mastery of literacy and language acquisition in both English and Spanish

Support for the development of higher order cognitive and critical thinking skills

The integration of sustainability-focused content and values across the curriculum

Hands on, project-based learning expeditions and learner-centered instruction

Admissions

As a D.C. public charter school, Mundo Verde is free and open to all D.C. residents. Mundo Verde participates in the My School DC common application and lottery every year. Families can only apply at myschooldc.org.

Please visit My School DC to get detailed information about the enrollment process.

Mundo Verde continues growing and will be serving grades PreK through 5th in both campuses for school year 2024-25.

Strong Relationships

Central to Mundo Verde’s commitment to community is a continuous effort to build strong relationships with families, to partner with our families around key aspects of school life and to seek regular input into decision-making. Mundo Verde ensures all families are invited and welcomed at all school events.

Why Work at Mundo Verde?

Mundo Verde staff are leaders in bringing about significant and lasting change both in the classroom and throughout the school. Team members collaborate deeply with each other to support students’ efforts to achieve as much as they possibly can, create a community of lifelong biliterate learners, support student’s social-emotional growth and foster an appreciation for the world around us. Together we engage in professional development activities that stretch and improve our practice. If you believe in every child’s potential and are eager to contribute and grow as an educator consider joining our Mundo Verde team!

Support

A parent-founded public charter school in the District of Columbia, Mundo Verde relies on a combination of public funding designated per enrolled student, competitive public funding, and the support of families and caregivers, community members, as well as private corporations and foundations to accomplish our unique mission. Our vibrant community of supporters provides funds critical for the implementation of Mundo Verde’s biliteracy curricula and the development of our two campuses.

Mundo Verde Instituto

At Mundo Verde we are lifelong learners. Throughout the years, we have learned (and continue to learn!) about developing bilingual learners, teaching in a bilingual setting and training bilingual teachers. We believe that educating students bilingually is the way to bridge the opportunity gap and uplift the lives of minority students.
