SY23 PARCC Results by Rodrigo Salgado, Director of Data and Accountability

On Thursday, August 24th PARCC results for school year 2022-23 were released by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE). In this blog, you will find some reflections on our school’s performance on PARCC including a window into areas of strength and focus. OSSE’s citywide presentation can be found HERE.

Mundo Verde continues to outperform the city and the charter sector, in both ELA and Math. The percentage of students performing in the 4 and 5 levels (meeting or exceeding expectations) increased from SY21-22 to SY22-23. In English Lenguage Arts (ELA), the percentage of students at levels 4 and 5 increased from 33.9 to 35.9 percent. In Mathematics, the percentage of students at levels 4 and 5 increased from 33.0 to 33.9 percent.

While it is encouraging to observe Mundo Verde maintaining a good relative performance to the city and sector, as well as observing growth year to year; a closer look at the results reveals both areas of strength and areas in need of focus/improvement in our school’s performance.

Areas of Strength

  • Fifty percent of our 5th graders performed at levels 4 and 5 in ELA, which is about 21 percentage points higher than the charter sector. This number is a particularly important measure for bilingual schools, as students in upper grades should be outperforming their peers in the city by a wider margin than in lower grades.

  • The percentage of Hispanic/Latino students performing at levels 4 and 5 in ELA has grown from 25 to 30 percent in grades 3rd-5th in ELA and from 20 to 21 percent in Math.  In both subjects, this subgroup of students is performing above the charter sector.

  • Students with disabilities are outperforming the charter sector in both ELA and Math, albeit the percentage of students from this subgroup at levels 4 and 5 remains small.

  • The percentage of English Learners performing at levels 4 and 5 at Mundo Verde is significantly higher than the city in Math and even in ELA.

  • The groups of students that took the PARCC assessment in both SY21-22 and SY22-23 (i.e. current 5th and 6th graders), showed significant improvement in ELA.

Areas of Focus

  • Only 12.9 percent of our Black/African American students performed at levels 4 and 5 in grades 3rd-5th in ELA (including only 10% in 5th grade).  In Math, the percentage of Black/African American students performing at levels 4 and 5 is 11.2 percent.  Mundo Verde is performing below the charter sector in both subjects with this subgroup.

  • The percentage of Mundo Verde students performing at levels 4 and 5 who are classified as economically disadvantaged by the city is below the charter sector in ELA and in Math.

  • The percentage of current 4th graders performing at levels 4 and 5 in Math decreased between SY21-22 and SY22-23.

While Mundo Verde leadership continues processing the results, some of the actions that the school has taken this year already seem to be aligned with the areas of focus:

  • The number of minutes invested in daily Math instruction has increased throughout all grade levels.

  • Teachers are starting the year equipped with improved Math & ELA curricula and training.

  • Departmentalization in grades 3rd-5th will allow teachers to focus on specific subjects. and, as a consequence, provide a more specialized/differentiated instruction to students. Learn more! - English & Spanish.

  • Co-teaching will allow students with disabilities to receive a higher level of differentiated instruction in the classroom, which should translate into better access to the general education curriculum.
