Teacher and Staff Appreciation Fund Collection Update
Thank you for your love and generosity!
Thanks to the generosity of the Mundo Verde community of parents and caregivers, a total of $14,626.08 was collected across the school as part of the Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. These funds made it possible to purchase 291 physical prepaid Visa cards to give to all staff (full time staff, part time staff, contractors and members of our janitorial crew) as a gift of appreciation from all parents and caregivers. The cards will be made available to all staff this week.
Thank you for making this annual tradition possible with your generous support!
Listen to Mariela Uribe, Spanish lead teacher, share her inspiring story of how the unique culture and mission of Mundo Verde captivated her and drew her to join our school community. Hear firsthand how she has been learning, growing, and thriving since becoming a part of our family.
Union troops were sent to Texas in 1865 to enforce an executive decree freeing 250,000 black Americans who were still enslaved, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. As a federal holiday on June 19, we commemorate this event as Juneteenth. And while there is much to celebrate, this “only marked the beginning of America’s work to deliver on the promise of equality,” as President Biden noted in 2021 when the holiday was created.
While words surely do matter, whether discussing equality or equity, diversity or inclusion, implicit or explicit bias, we all know that race all too often still divides and seperates. Whether in school classrooms or on the national political stage, whether explicit or implicit, and whether acknowledged or not race remains a powerful and contentious force - that shapes how we think and behave toward one another. When it comes to race, we are still very much working on a draft. And as a school, as school leaders, as both teachers and learners, there remains much work to be done in our community. There is no alternative but perseverence - the “P” in our ESPICA values. The work isn’t easy, the conversations can be fraught, the change can be painful.
Persevere we shall. Let us each pledge to one another that we will set aside some time next week on June 19th to reflect on what we can do, what we can say to our children, how we can change some aspect of our personal behavior to bring forth a more just and equitable society.
HEALTH & SAFETY
DC Law requires each student attending a DC public school or public charter school to present valid written immunization certification, documenting that they have been successfully immunized in accordance with current Department of Health immunization requirements, to their school before the first day of classes.
Students who do not submit their records within 90 days of the first day of school will be temporary excluded until their records are submitted.
Please note DC Health has updated the locations list for pediatric vaccinations throughout the District HERE.

NEW! Get Involved in Forming a Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)!

We invite all caregivers and teachers at Calle Ocho to participate in this exciting transition! Here are the ways you can get involved:
Review the draft purpose and bylaws and provide feedback by June 30.
Volunteer to serve as an interim director of the organization. We need at least three Directors. More information on the (limited!) responsibilities and volunteer form here.

This virtual clinic is part of an ongoing effort to provide free, low-barrier consultations for clients who need legal immigration screening, brief advice, and referrals.
