MESSAGE
On May 24, Mundo Verde finalized the purchased of the 817 Varnum St. NE property which will enable the construction of an addition to the Calle Ocho campus.
With this purchase and its planned reconstruction, the school will complete the replication of its academic programming, encompassing students in PreK through 5th, at the Calle Ocho campus. Among the elements the purchase supports are additional space for classrooms, flexible spaces for outdoor play and learning, and access to fresh, healthy meals cooked on-site in a new commercial kitchen.
Background: This purchase takes place as a part of the school’s comprehensive facilities and financing plan that also made possible the purchase of the main Calle Ocho campus (4401 8th Street NE), and the refinancing of the existing debt owed for the J.F. Cook campus (30 P Street NW). The school was very pleased to be able to secure loan terms that include a low interest rate of 3.6 percent for the next 20 years.

Comunidad is having a lemonade stand!
Sunday, June 4 - at OpenStreets Brookland
As a Ward 5 school, Comunidad has a table at this year’s Open Streets festival on 12th St NE. As a student-led activity (with caregiver support!), Calle Oche students will offer free lemonade to passersby and share about the school community (while also seeking voluntary donations from the broader community as our first Comunidad fundraiser). They will also have a creative corner for kids to make art with recycled materials, listen to music, and play Spanish-language games.
How to get involved:
Offer supplies or make a donation (including craft materials and your leftovers for upcycling crafts). Bring your extra art supplies and smaller recyclables to donate for the art table. A recycling bin will be next to Lost and Found (behind the front desk) to collect donations.
For any questions about this event, reach out to whhensley@gmail.com
