ACADEMICS

More Celebrations of Learning Coming Up!

Celebrations of learning are more than a display of student work. The events compel students to reflect on and articulate what they have learned, how they learned, questions they answered, research they conducted, and areas of strength and struggles. They are powerful opportunities to make learning public.

The Expo may include artwork, research results from an experiment, written work, tests, or other projects. At Expo students demonstrate what has been learned more clearly than just a grade on a report card can. It also gives other students ideas that will help them improve their own work and helps to set a standard for excellent work from all students.

Please find below the date and time of your child's Expo:

J.F. Cook Campus Expos (Zócalo 9:15-10:15am):

3rd grade - Tuesday, January 31

COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION & QUESTIONS

NEW! School Closures and Delays Due to Inclement Weather

Mundo Verde follows D.C. Public Schools’ (DCPS) decision regarding changes in the school schedule due to inclement weather. In the event of a delayed opening, the before school program is canceled. In the event of early dismissal, the after school program is canceled. In some cases the school reserves the right to make a different decision than the one made by DCPS if necessary.

Information about school closures and delays are available through:

  • Text Message & Email: A text message and/or an email is sent to families and staff when a closing or delay is decided (the night before or the morning of)

  • School Website: A note on the school website top announcement bar

  • Radio Station: WTOP (1500 AM, 107.7 FM)

  • Television: WJLA News Channel 7

  • School Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

This content can be found in the Family Handbook on page 66 in English, and page 71 in Spanish.

NEW! Family Handbook

Premised on the foundational concept of crew, that none of us are passengers along for the ride, but rather all active participants, the Family Handbook explains in detail the school rules, norms, protocols and procedures. In English y Spanish, it speaks to our collaborative vision for learning; teachers, students, and parents/caregivers, all working together as a synchronized crew to support students to grow more than they think possible.

As members of the Mundo Verde community, we all strive to embody the characteristics of Community Stewardship by practicing six community-building values and virtues in our everyday operation (known by the acronym ESPICA). We understand that we matter; our actions, attitudes and priorities today will leave an imprint on generations to come. We are charged with caring for the world around us so as not to sacrifice the needs of others in the present or those in the future.

Please note the content highlighted in gray indicates activities, celebrations, services, and others that were impacted by the pandemic and that for SY22-23 may continue to be adjusted due to residual impact during recovery.

Compost Drop Off for Our Community J.F. Cook Campus

The compost drop off program is now open and Mundo Verde families and staff can drop off food waste to be composted!  Bring your food scraps during the Garden Market every Tuesday from 3:30-4:30pm. This is currently only available at J.F. Cook campus. We will introduce this compost program at Calle Ocho this winter.

If you have any questions, please email Carissa Tirado-Marks,  Sustainability Manager at  ctiradomarks@mundoverdepcs.org

HEALTH & SAFETY

New Year’s Health and Safety Measures: Covid Tests and Masking

With an abundance of caution as staff and families return to campus from winter break and travel, Mundo Verde is requiring negative Covid tests and masking for the first two weeks in January. Both of these required policies will apply to ALL staff and students.  More details on Covid tests below.

Test for Covid Prior to Returning to Campus by January 2, 5:00pm

Following the SY22-23 Covid Policy (English / Spanish), Mundo Verde has provided Covid rapid antigen tests to students to ensure that as many individuals as possible return to campus with negative results. Please submit your child’s test results by completing the following form by 5:00pm on Monday, Jan 2. Testing should be done 24 hours prior to returning to school. Please clearly write the student's name and the date the test was completed on the test itself.

The forms are currently closed and they will be accessible starting on Jan 2, 2023 in the same link.

J.F. Cook Campus: https://mundoverde.tfaforms.net/329

Calle Ocho Campus: https://mundoverde.tfaforms.net/330

Individuals who do not submit a Covid test result on time will not be allowed to enter the campus until a Covid test result is submitted and reviewed by the Covid team. Tests will be available onsite for parents/caregivers to administer to their children before they enter the building.

Student Care - Sick Students Should Stay Home

In order to maintain a healthy school, parents/caregivers should not send their children to school with any contagious diseases such as the flu, strep throat, chickenpox, measles, conjunctivitis (pink eye), ringworm, or scabies. Students with any of these conditions will be sent home from school until they are no longer contagious. Parents/caregivers must pick up their child within two hours of being notified that their child is sick with a contagious illness. Please follow the following guidelines:

  • If the student is not feeling well in the morning, particularly if he or she has a fever of 100 degrees or more, do not send him or her to school.

  • Parents/caregivers should not send their children to school within 24 hours of vomiting or running a fever of 100 degrees or higher.

  • Students should not return to school until 24 – 36 hours after beginning the course of antibiotics.

  • If parents/caregivers believe that the student has a communicable disease, we encourage them to visit a Doctor's office, clinic, health center or ER.

  • If parents/caregivers have questions about what illnesses qualify as communicable diseases (please see the list here).

  • If the student is diagnosed and/or treated for a communicable disease, please inform the school and provide the nurse/medically trained staff with any necessary documentation at cookhealth@mundoverdepcs.org and cookattendance@mundoverdepcs.org (for J.F. Cook campus), or c8health@mundoverdepcs.org and c8attendance@mundoverdepcs.org (for Calle Ocho campus) and / or in person. The school will request documentation that the student is cleared to return to school both for their safety and the safety of other students and staff in order for them to return to school.

To read more about Student Care, visit page 58 on the Family Handbook in English (page 61 for Spanish). The Family Handbook is also located in the Families Portal (password: crew) on the school website.

Keeping Our School Community Healthy

Everyday Preventive Actions Can Help Fight Germs Like Flu

CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends some strategies to fight the flu:

  • Get the flu vaccine

  • Take everyday preventive actions (avoid close contact with people who are sick, wash your hands often with soap, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs)

  • If you get sick with the flu, get an early treatment

To learn more about how does flu spread, what are other everyday preventive actions, what steps you can take to help stop the spread of germs, and what you can do to protect your child, please check out these brochures from the CDC website English / Spanish.

As Our Weather Changes, Make Sure Your Children are Ready for Outdoor Recess!

As we begin to experience fluctuating temperatures, please prepare your children with the appropriate gear - especially for days when there is a chill in the air. We go outside when it is cold! We recommend a jacket and head covering, and appropriate protection for hands, feet and head. When there is inclement weather we may at times opt for indoor recess. If you need any assistance providing these items for your family, please contact the front desk of your campus.

Extended Day Program Updates

Unit 2 Program Schedule And Special Workshops
In November, students in the after school program were asked to name at least two specialties they were most interested in. Based on the results, we will bring some of the most popular specialties (chess, martial arts, and art) to the program in Unit 2 which will run from Jan 3-Apr 14.

Please view the schedules below:

Read Aloud Initiative
In Unit 2, we will begin a Read Aloud Initiative. This initiative will focus on reading from a collection of select books for students to practice listening, discussing, and retelling skills in Spanish. The books will also be the anchor for complementary activities throughout the week designed to encourage children to wonder, imagine and reflect, while building their vocabulary in Spanish.
